PLUS: Japanese citizens tried, but failed... again. Dual citizenship is still illegal
Good morning, global opportunists!
Welcome to the 44th article from The Sovereign Atlas! Every Friday we publish quick updates that benefit your global sovereignty lifestyle.
Here’s what we’ve got this week:
Maltese Citizenship Could Be in Your Future 🇲🇹
The End of US Birthright Laws? 🇺🇸
The New American Dream 🇺🇸
Japan Still Rules Against Dual Citizenship 🇯🇵
Let’s go!
UPDATE
If you’ve got Maltese roots, citizenship by descent might be on the table. Malta allows descendants of Maltese nationals, up to three generations removed, to apply for citizenship. This is great news for the estimated hundreds of thousands worldwide who qualify.
What you need
Applicants must provide documents proving Maltese ancestry, such as birth, marriage, or death certificates.
Why it’s a big deal
EU membership means Maltese citizens enjoy the perks of living, working, and studying anywhere in the European Union.
UPDATE
Donald Trump is back with a major target: birthright citizenship. The former president has pledged to end the automatic citizenship granted to anyone born on U.S. soil, a right protected by the 14th Amendment since 1868.
What's his plan?
Trump aims to issue an executive order to end birthright citizenship if re-elected, and GOP lawmakers are pushing legislation to limit citizenship to children of U.S. citizens, residents, or military members.
Will it happen?
A conservative Supreme Court might be open to reinterpreting this long-standing precedent.
UPDATE
More Americans are redefining the American Dream, choosing to build lives abroad rather than in the U.S. Political instability, economic uncertainty, and a desire for cultural experiences are driving high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) to explore residency and citizenship through investment migration.
Why move?
Investment migration offers access to stable countries with lower costs of living, better quality of life, and financial benefits like tax advantages.
Popular destinations
Countries like Greece, Turkey, and Saint Kitts & Nevis are attracting Americans with residency programs and appealing lifestyles.

UPDATE
Japan's dual nationality ban remains in effect after a Tokyo District Court ruling rejected a case by a teenager who lost his Japanese citizenship upon acquiring British nationality. The plaintiff, who was 14 when his parents chose to obtain UK citizenship on his behalf, argued that the law shouldn't apply to minors and violated Japan’s Constitution.
The Ruling
The court ruled Japan’s nationality law is constitutional, reaffirming that individuals must choose one nationality before turning 22.
Future Outlooks
While Japan continues to say “no” to dual citizenship, the possibility of laws changing and allowing dual citizenship will most likely change in the coming years. More and more Japanese natives are advocating for dual citizenship, challenging current laws, and the new PM is set to change the residency and citizenship setup of Japan.
